Huntress vs CrowdStrike vs Sophos: Choosing EDR for a Small Business.

Vendor comparisons are usually written by someone selling one of the options. This one is written by a provider that deploys more than one of them, so the useful framing is not "which is best" — it is which gaps each one leaves, because that determines what else you have to buy.

The short answer

• Huntress — built for small and mid-size businesses, sold largely through providers. 24/7 SOC included in the base price. Strong on Microsoft 365 identity.
• CrowdStrike — the enterprise standard. Deepest EDR and identity coverage, published self-serve tiers, and a real patch-deployment product. EDR only starts at the Enterprise tier.
• Sophos — the broadest portfolio. The only one of the three with email security, firewall hardware and MDM in-house. No published pricing.

And the fact that reframes the whole decision: none of them does backup.

Pricing

Two notes worth more than the numbers.

CrowdStrike's cheap tiers are not EDR. Falcon Go and Pro are next-gen antivirus. If an insurer or client asks whether you run EDR, the comparable price is $19.99, not $7.99. Full breakdown in how much CrowdStrike costs.

Huntress includes the SOC in the base price. With CrowdStrike, 24/7 human response is Falcon Complete, quoted separately. That difference usually matters more to a 30-person company than any detection-quality comparison.

Where each one genuinely wins

Huntress — the small-business economics are better and not by a little. The 24/7 SOC is not an upsell, identity coverage for Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace is first-class, and there is no minimum through a provider. The trade-off is a narrower platform: no email gateway, no firewall, no MDM, and its vulnerability and patch story is behind Sophos.

CrowdStrike — the deepest endpoint and identity product of the three, with managed threat hunting and Falcon for IT, which actually deploys patches rather than only listing missing ones. That is a real advantage. The trade-offs: EDR starts at the $19.99 tier, the managed tier is quote-gated, and its native gaps mirror Huntress's almost exactly.

Sophos — the only one you can build most of a stack on from a single vendor: endpoint, MDR, email, firewall, wireless, MDM, cloud posture, ZTNA. If consolidating vendors is the goal, it is the obvious candidate. Trade-offs: no published pricing at all, and it runs two separate MDR lines (its own and the Secureworks/Taegis line) which are not merged — so ask specifically which one a quote refers to.

Choosing a "Sophos alternative"

People search for this a lot, and the question is usually underspecified. Which part of Sophos?

• Replacing endpoint and 24/7 response → Huntress or CrowdStrike both work.
• Replacing the whole stack → you are not buying one product, you are buying three or four. Dropping Sophos for an endpoint-only vendor leaves email security, firewall and MDM uncovered, and that is where the migration budget quietly goes.

Which is the general lesson: compare programmes, not agents.

The gap nobody prices in

Say it once more, because it is the most consequential line in this article:

No major EDR vendor sells backup.

Not Huntress. Not CrowdStrike. Not Sophos. If ransomware encrypts your file server, EDR contains the spread — restoring the data is entirely a backup problem, and it is the thing that decides whether you reopen. Microsoft does not back up your Microsoft 365 data for you either.

How to actually decide

1. Is anyone watching it 24/7? This dominates everything else. Excellent EDR with nobody reading the console loses to mediocre EDR with a real SOC behind it. Ask any provider: will you isolate a machine without calling me first?

2. What are you already running? If Defender, Sophos or SentinelOne is deployed and healthy, adding monitoring is usually faster and cheaper than migrating. Be sceptical of anyone who opens with a rip-and-replace.

3. Which gaps will you fill, and with what? Write down email, firewall, MDM and backup and name a vendor and a price for each. That list, not the agent comparison, is your real security budget.

4. Per device or per user? Per-device pricing penalises multi-device staff. Below roughly 100 people, per-user bundles usually win.

5. What does the exit look like? Do you own the tenant, the licences, the logs? Ask before signing.
